Y
ou say the thought of sitting through a two-and-a-half-hour foreign film doesn't thrill you?  Take another look at Vincent Perez, who costars opposite Catherine Deneuve in Indochine.  The 28-year-old actor plays Jean-Baptiste, a gorgeous guy in pain...  and in uniform.  As the French lieutenant, Perez finds himself torn between two women and two cultures.

"They give me all the lover parts, (laughing a bit self-consciously) but I'm trying to change that.  It's interesting, but it's not enough."

Trained at the Conservatory in Paris, the Swiss native first commanded attention as Christian in Cyrano de Bergerac (ah, yes, another uniform). Ever since, he's been called upon to partner some of France's most beautiful women, including Emmanuelle Beart, Isabelle Adjani, and, of course, the divine Deneuve. "She not afraid to say what she thinks," says Perez admiringly. "She can't play with lies."

Perez spent nine months in the Far East on Indochine. "For the first time in my life, "he says, "I felt very far away from my home and also alone." Today, calling from his Paris apartment, he is neither. "I'm not married, but maybe very soon," he says, explaining the woman's voice in the background. Upon hearing this, Italian supermodel Carla Bruni picks up an extension and exclaims, "We are in love!" Perez sighs. "Now you know everything," he says. "Madly in love."
